What past participants have said:
Artistic Summer Training is amazing. Its great
to wake up every morning and be able to learn new things and play taiko
with other people who are as motivated as you. I got so many new things
out of AST, but Im not going to list them all because that would kind
of take away the fun of wondering what youre going to learn. But I
will say you will learn more than just taiko. - Mari
"Growth
as an individual taiko player is definitely something you will experience,
but an even more profound experience may be the one of creating ensemble
with people who may be strangers to you at the beginning of the four weeks.
A very important message I carry away from my AST experience is one about
taking risks, communicating, and making connections with fellow performers,
creating safety for them and trusting they provide the same for you in order
to create the energy that will impress an audience far more than any amount
of technical accuracy in absence of this relationship." - Julie
"As a whole, the program was a really great way to challenge myself to get as much as I possibly could out of the experience. We were asked to absorb a lot of information in a very short period of time and although I occasionally felt overwhelmed, I also surprised myself in my ability to rise to the challenge, and I learned that my limits are greater than I realized (i.e. I would think something was beyond my limits, but it turned out that it wasn't). I also realized that playing taiko means a lot more than hitting the drum and getting the sequence right; it is also important to connect with the audience and communicate something to them. While I feel I have only made small steps on my path to being a taiko player, I have come out of the program a stronger taiko player and performer and I would highly recommend it to anybody who wants to improve their taiko and performance skills in an immersive environment, no matter their current level of experience." - Keiko
